MENSTRUAL HYGIENE PROJECT 2023
In the last half of February, DHI started a project in collaboration with Harvard Undergraduate Partners for Action. The project titled Enabib aim to provide Secondary School Students the opportunity to develop and lead initiatives that addresses the challenges to menstrual hygiene management.
The Beneficiaries of the project were female senior secondary school students in Lagos and the project was carried out in Afara Leadership Centre in Yaba, Lagos. It consisted of six sessions conducted via Zoom and spread across four months (February to May). We had a number of breaks due to the election curfews, Easter holidays and logistics issues from both ends.
We started the project on the 18th of February 2023. We met two of the Harvard undergraduates coordinating the Enabib project, Ogechukwu Ogbogu and Treasure Orji. They presented an overview of the project. The students also had an opportunity to express their expectations and to ask any questions they had regarding menstrual hygiene management in general.
The second session took place on the 4th of March and the topic was introduction to Menstruation. The Students learnt about periods, how they happen and the importance of tracking one's period.
In the third session on the 25th of March, the girls learnt about hormones involved in menstruation and how they change in pregnancy. They also learnt about period symptoms amd disorders that can influence/exacerbate them including polycystic ovarian syndrome, fibroids etc.
